Why is the district changing the standards?
The State of Tennessee has created new standards to help our students become more competitive globally. Therefore, expectations must be raised for students in our public schools. Beginning August 2009, Tennessee standards/curriculum (what is taught at each grade level) for elementary students are changing in math, science, and language arts. Many of the standards will be more rigorous. The impact of the standards will be what was previously taught in a grade level will now be taught in the grade level below. A specific example is, multiplication facts are currently being taught in third grade whereas, next year, multiplication facts will be taught in second grade. Teachers have participated in professional development throughout the summer to be prepared to implement the new standards. They have studied the changes in the standards, comparing the old with the new. They have also begun teaching the new standards in a number of areas to ensure that students do not have gaps in their learning. Your support in assisting us in these areas will enable a smoother transition to the new standards and ensure your child's success.
